DRY NEEDLING

What is dry needling and how is it different than acupuncture?

Acupuncture is based off of ancient Chinese medicine where very small needles are used along meridian lines to help balance energy.

Generally, dry needling uses acupuncture-sized needles directly on trigger points or places of muscle tension to help relieve tightness and ease pain.  Dr. Jenkins was trained in Integrative Dry Needling which is an approach that focuses on areas of neurogenic inflammation. Because this method uses a peripheral nerve mapping model, needles can be placed in areas which are not tight or painful but will still have a local and systemic effect on the body. It is a comprehensive approach leading to faster and longer lasting results.

INSTRUMENT-ASSITED SOFT TISSUE MASSAGE (IASTM)

Tools, like Gua Sha stones, have been used for massage in Eastern medicine dating back to 700 years ago during the Ming Dynasty. We eventually caught up here in the West and now use instruments for specific type of massage to help:

  • Improve blood flow

  • Break up scar tissue

  •  Release fascia (like plantar fascia and IT Band)

  • Reduce muscle tension and tightness

  • Relieve tendinitis

Using special tools can aide in expedited healing of tissues, making you better faster.

HYPOPRESSIVES

Hypopressives are a type of exercise that stem from a yogic breath lock called uddiyanha bandha. In Spain, hypopressives are commonly incorporated to improve core strength and function. They are so helpful that they even have group classes so that people can maintain the benefits of their personalized training.

Dr. Jenkins was trained directly by Tamara Rial, PhD, CSPS, a pioneer researcher in the field of hypopressives. Dr. Jenkins has seen firsthand how hypopressive exercises can be a powerful tool in managing core and postural issues.
